Stage crew visits Fabulous Fox

Tues., Feb. 19
10:08 am
Girls in the back of the bus sing their favorite songs, others laugh as they talk about their four day weekend, the bus driver taps her fingers to the makeshift choir in the back. Everyone is anxious for the day ahead.

10:31
Waiting inside the front doors, actors and Tech Theater II students are about to begin their tour of the Fox Theatre in St. Louis.

“In St. Louis we call it not just the Fox, but the Fabulous Fox because it’s so marvelous,” tour guide Florrey Shulman said, who has owned permanent season seats in the Fox since its reopening in 1982.

By now, they’ve been on every floor, heard the story of the theatre, and marvelled at the architecture. Now, standing on stage, they can see it all at once.

The towering columns lining the walls. The spikes at the very top of the ceiling. The 4,900 seats. Some take out their cameras, some point out every new thing they notice, some simply stand and take it all in.

“This is what the greatest stars that performed here saw,” senior Sara Cantrell said. “Like the main stars, like Elphaba in Wicked and the Phantom and even Frank Sinatra.”

The tour continues into the dressing rooms. It’s a tradition at the Fox for every production that performs there to paint a mural on the wall and have the whole cast sign it. Four floors of walls, ceilings, doors, even steps, are covered in every play, musical, or concert imaginable.

“[My favorite part was] back in the dressing rooms where they had all the casts’ signatures and stuff,” junior Nick Labath said.

At the end of the dressing rooms is the exit. Students thank Shulman and walk out the door.

12:04 p.m.
Once again the bus is filled with noise. It pulls away from the Fabulous Fox, girls singing, kids laughing, fingers tapping.
