Girls swimming defeats St. Charles at YMCA

The varsity girls swim team defeated St. Charles West on Thursday Jan 15. The meet was held at the St. Charles YMCA which is West’s home pool.

Sophomore Amy Getzlow won the 500 meter freestyle event. The team also took the top three places in the 50 meter freestyle with Getzlow placing first. Junior Lizzie Johnson took second, and freshman Amanda Iborg took third.

The girls are used to swimming in a pool measured in yards, but yesterday the YMCA pool was measured in meters. A meter is made up of a little more than three feet, while a yard is exactly three, but sometimes that makes a difference.

“It was difficult because even though it wasn’t that much more swimming, it got in my head that I was actually swimming more,” sophomore Coleen Grone said. “I guess it was a mental thing.”

Support the girls swim team as they compete against Ft. Zumwalt West on Wednesday Jan. 21. The meet will be at the Rec Plex at 3:30 p.m.
