Fire at Francis Howell North
Sirens could be heard speeding down the street at about 2:35p.m. on Thursday Jan. 22 to the fire at Francis Howell North. There were four fires by the nature trail behind Howell North that were suspected to have been started by an unknown person.
“The flames were about minutes away from being very deadly,” Ed Gettemeier, an assistant principal at Howell North said. “Fortunately the fire department got here very quickly. We are dealing with it right now.”
Not even an hour after the fires had been reported, three of the four were put out and only ashes remained. The firefighters had to work by hand at first because the firetruck was too big to fit where the fires were located. A smaller truck, called a brush truck, was then dispatched to finish what was left.
“If that thing [the fire] would’ve followed all those dry trees down to those houses, it could’ve been really bad,” Gettemeier said.
Luckily the fires were handled properly, so no one was harmed. School officials will be working diligently to find the cause of the fires.
