Track prepares for districts, breaks records

Two days to go. Two days until the top 40 track athletes suit up for their biggest event of the year: districts.

On May 15, the FHN boys’ and girls’ track team will be competing in districts, the first round of state competition. The team will be competing in a new district with 12 other teams, making this years’ competition even harder.
“As a team, I think we’ll be decent,” junior Stephanie Agre said. “Our sprinters are really good, and our distance team is always solid, so we’ll be alright.”
In the past few weeks, the track team has competed in various meets such as the Marion Freeman Invitational at Clayton High School, the Parkway West Invitational and GACs. Because of their success, the team has high expectations for the upcoming weekend.
“I have high expectations for both levels,” jumping coach Kristen Bash said. “JV and Varsity boys won GACs last year. The girls are going to do pretty well, too.”
Although GACs symbolize the season winding down for most, it is in fact just the beginning for those who are peaking in time for state.
“I’m working really hard when I go to practice everyday,” Agre said. “My goal is to get at least third in triple jump [at state].”
Athletes like Agre who have been working all season are beginning to turn their work ethic into results, mainly through personal records and in some cases, even school and meet records. In the past few weeks, over five athletes have PR’d in various track meets.
“We’ve had several athletes do well,” Head coach Greg Hennenfent said. “Nick Happe beat his personal record in the two mile. He’s a nationally ranked top ten runner. He’s in the big time now.”
Other athletes who have PR’d include Kyle Morse in pole vault, Fiona Brooks in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and Lauren Viehmann in high jump.
“This is the way it should be,” Hennenfent said. “We’ve got our guys peaking right now, they’re ready to go.”
