Varsity boys finish top 10 at match

After enduring strong wind and wet greens at Old Hickory golf course on April 20, the FHN boys varsity golf team fared well, taking seventh out of 17 teams in attendance.

Some competing teams included Francis Howell High School, Francis Howell Central, and all of the Fort Zumwalt schools. While the team has lost several games, varsity coach Lester Hager has high hopes for the remainder of the season.
“In general, we are trying for an average varsity score of 42 or lower on nine holes, qualify at least two people out of districts to go to state, and finish in the top half of GACs,” Hager said.
Maintaining an unvarying game is a common goal for the entire team, and although they struggle with it now, the team’s strengths could carry them to success.
“We have good camaraderie and all five of our players are capable of doing well, but we haven’t been consistent so far,” junior Tyler Wagner said.
One outstanding player from the tournament at Old Hickory was senior Brandon Lewis, who shot a 78 and placed fifth out of 84 players. Despite the unsatisfactory
course conditions, Lewis led the Knights in the tournament and came home a winner.
“For me, its one of my goals I’ve got checked off,” Lewis said. “In this tournament, I wasn’t nervous, I was calm and I was more focused than I usually am.”
In the end, the Varsity golf team met one of their major team goals with Brandon Lewis and sophomore
Clint Toedtmann headed to State.
“I just ask them to go out there and do their best,” Hager said. “I hope that they enjoy and learn from the experience, that’s all you can ask.”
