Journalism students win Gold Key awards

goldkey012910Quill and Scroll gave out their Gold Key Awards for last year’s work. Several of North’s students in publications received one.

“We had winners,” Journalism teacher Aaron Manfull said. “Erica Rutsh, Jamie Brandon, Alyssa Wind, Lydia Ness, Melissa Shannon won two, Stevie Johnson and Maddie Baum won one too.”

When senior Stevie Johnson found out she had won, she was thrilled.

“I was really excited,” Johnson said, “Because I knew that it was a big deal. I was also shocked but really proud of myself.”

Not only are the journalism students proud of their work, Manfull believes the award is rightly earned.

“I am always very happy when students get honored for their work,” Manfull said. “I always think they do great work so it’s nice to see others think that too.”

Manfull and Johnson see the award not only as an accomplishment but also a stepping stone to improvement.

“I think it helps encourage students to try their best,” Johnson said, “And when we do get it [award] it’s a nice surprise and it reminds us of our hard work.”

North’s journalism program also will be honored at the end of March in New York City for their yearbook and North Star news magazine. The yearbook won a gold medalist ranking from the
Columbian Scholastic Press Association or CSPA. The North Star was named a Crown Award finalist also given by the CSPA.
