Track and Field Districts Preview

Districts for Track and Field will be held Saturday, May 11 and the FHN team could not be more ready for it.

“The whole team has done really amazing this year,” freshman distance runner Kristen Metts said. “I am so proud of all of the team and I am also proud to be a part of this team.”

Districts is where all the schools within the Gateway Athletic Conference (GAC) and other schools within the area compete in order to move on to sectionals. The first four athletes who finish in each event move on to sectionals.

“Districts is where you either do or die for the season,” sophomore distance runner Timmy Bries said. “If you don’t make it at districts, the only thing you can do is train for next season.”

The team has had a good year and has even shattered records this season. Senior hurdler Jon Schuab broke the school record for the 300 meter hurdles on Friday, April 19. Read more about the record here.

“We have had a great year so far, and next year we can only improve,” Schuab said.

At GAC’s, the girls JV track team managed to take first place and the boys JV team ended up tying  for first with Timberland. Although the JV does not get to go to districts, the team wants to have victories like that bring them moral support.

“I really think the team has been doing great this year,” Metts said. “I could not be more happy with this team even if they all went to state.”

All of the athletes participating in districts this year are shooting for state. Districts is only the starting point for making it down the long road to state.

“I would not step on that track only to know I am going to lose,” Bries said. “If you don’t want to win, then why are you here?”
