Weekly Wyer: Sneaker of the Week

New York streetwear powerhouse Supreme recently linked up with Vans and will be releasing another collaboration shoe with Japanese brand Comme des Garçons SHIRT. This time around, the collaboration utilizes the Vans Era

and the Vans Sk8-Hi silhouettes.

The shoes take advantage of CDG’s premium fabrics and encompasses the general visual ideas and motifs of the apparel side of the collection. The Vans feature the CDG x Supreme signature polka dot motif along the backside.

of the shoes and also features pinstripes on the front of the upper. The backside is also stamped with Supreme’s backwards logo, which is not a first for the apparel side of the collections, but a first for the Supreme x CDG x Vans collaborations. A picture of the legendary NYC skater Harold Hunter graces the side panels of the Sk8-His and the insoles of the Eras. The shoes also feature prominent branding from Comme des Garçons SHIRT alongside the midsole.

While the motifs do clash (especially on the Sk8-His), I feel it adds to the general “out there” ideas of the CDG x Supreme collections. On the Sk8-His, a picture of the legendary NYC skater Harold Hunter graces the side panels and makes the shoe look and feel incredibly hectic. While I do like the idea of paying tribute to Harold Hunter, I feel the shoes have too much going on. The clashing patterns, branding, and picture of Harold Hunter just seems over the top to me, and a slight departure from what the CDG x Supreme collections usually are. I feel as if the shoe could’ve been improved upon if they stuck with two general ideas and got rid of the branding.

The shoes are definitely a collector’s item and I envision myself picking up a pair, but I can also see myself selling them later. Overall, the shoes are beautiful with a few minor flaws. Be sure to pick these up when they drop sometime in mid-June.
