New during the 2014-2015 school-year, Sophomore Students will be able to participate in a “retired” ACT + Writing assessment. This will take place onThursday, September 18thduring the day. All other students will attend classes as usual. The purpose of this assessment will be to gain a baseline measure for students on this national test. This opportunity will allow students exposure to the ACT testing format, provide them an opportunity to gauge pacing of the test, and allow for an opportunity to discover areas the student may want to seek further practice to prepare for taking the ACT in the future. The ACT assessment given on this date will be scored by Princeton Review. Please feel free to contact Dr. Birch at 851-5020 if you have any questions/concerns. 9/18Birch

Practice ACT – Sign-up Now! FHN will be offering a Practice ACT on September 20th at 8 a.m. The cost to take the test is $10, and 100% of the money raised will benefit student organizations at FHN. *The C-Taem completed a good week, by going 4and 1, the team went 2 and 1 in the Zumwalt West Tournament, with a third place finish. We defeated Howell Central 29-3 and Troy 10-8. The team had homeruns from Janae Watkins and Skylar Ruiz. There was a lot of clutch hitting from Maddie Kraus, Sahaura Pauley, Emily Fetsch and Allison Flores. Very good job by everybody on the team. We play Troy today at home, the first of seven games this week. 9/15 Stewart

*The cross country team had an awesome meet at the Forest Park Cross Country Festival on Saturday. They had eleven athletes earn medals. The JV boys team and the Varsity boys team finished in 2nd place. There were 57 teams in their division. Wow, great job, cross country!!!! 9/16 Fowler

OUR DRUG CULTURE: Homecoming and Alcohol

Homecoming is an annual rite of passage for high school students, and one that often involves alcohol. Underage drinking and alcohol-related crashes involving minors tend to increase during homecoming season.

•22% of teen drivers involved in fatal car crashes were drinking
•More than half of fatal motor accidents involving teen drivers occur on weekends

Here are 5 actions parents can take to prevent underage drinking:

—– Discuss your expectations about alcohol use- Parents do influence teens’ drinking decisions. Research shows children may interpret a parent’s failure to talk about underage drinking as indifference, making them more likely to use alcohol. Have regular conversations with your teen about alcohol misuse, and specifically talk about it before events, like homecoming, that may include alcohol.

—– Find out who your teen will be with and talk with the other students’ parents- It is illegal and dangerous to provide alcohol to teens in the home (social hosting). Asking questions will help keep your teen safe.

—– Provide a sober after-party space- Providing an alcohol-free environment allows the party to keep going safely. And it’s important for parents to actively supervise after-parties. Adults can be held responsible for failing to supervise minors who are later caught drinking, even if the adult didn’t supply or know about the alcohol.

—– Offer to drive or pay for a limo- Providing a guaranteed designated driver ensures your child won’t end up in a car with an intoxicated person behind the wheel. Driving your teen or using a car service also removes other risks, such as texting or distracted driving, which may increase with the excitement of the evening.

—– Let your teen know you are “on call”- While parents should not condone underage drinking, it’s important for teens to know they can call for help if they or their friends don’t have a safe ride or are in danger.

FHSD Alumni Association To Host Second Annual Golf Tournament

The Francis Howell School District Alumni Association will be holding the second annual Golf Tournament on Monday, October 13, 2014, at Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters. The tournament is designed to bring together District alumni, local businesses, and the FHSD community for an afternoon of fun. This activity will benefit and help fund the establishment of an Alumni Association in the District.

Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a shotgun start and tournament play at 11:00 a.m. The cost to play in the tournament is $125 per person and includes green fees, golf cart, on course non-alcoholic beverages, lunch, buffet dinner, and a chance to win various prizes. The entry deadline is October 3.

The 2014 Knights E-Raffle which is being sponsored by the FHN Athletic Booster Club started August 18 and will continue through September 15. The E-Raffle will help raise thousands of dollars for many organizations in the FHN community.

2014-15 Youth Spectator Guidelines

All students and children currently enrolled in the eighth grade and younger must be accompanied and directly supervised by an adult to be admitted to or remain at the event. We expect students and children to remain under the supervision of the adult that they are attending the event with.

Youth spectators as described above will not be admitted to the stadium without a designated adult. ANY YOUTH SPECTATORS WITHOUT A DESIGNATED ADULT WILL BE HELD OUTSIDE THE STADIUM UNTIL THEIR PARENTS COME TO PICK THEM UP OR ACCOMPANY THEM INTO THE GAME.

Accompanying adults are asked to maintain diligent supervision of those youth spectators for which they have assumed responsibility the entire contest. Any youth spectators found to be without adult supervision will be returned to the adult(s) they came to game with. If their adults are unable to be found, they will be held outside the stadium until a responsible adult comes to pick them up or accompany them back to the game.

Sportsmanship/Cheering Expectations

For the enjoyment of all, the following expectations for fans, players, and students will be enforced:
No student seating on the front row of the bleachers. No standing on the floor.
Continuous standing in designated areas only.
No profanity or implied profanity allowed.
No disrespectful chants including personal remarks directed at players and officials.
No singling out players by number or name on posters, signs, or chants.
No disrespectful behaviors to other fans, players, or cheerleaders.
Cheerleaders will not cross over half-court in basketball games.
Sportsmanship Banners will be displayed at all schools and appropriate expectations will be explained during public service announcements.
Cheer for your own team – Not against the other team!
Pre-Game Activities
Must be school organized and approved.
No coolers.
Faculty members (coaches, sponsors, or administrators) must do all cooking unless it is provided by an outside source (vendor, food trucks, etc.)
Must be in a designated area set up by the Administration.
Dress Code at Outside Events
Since a major part of Education Based Athletics is that we are an extension of the classroom, students will NOT be allowed to attend games without proper attire, students CANNOT be shirtless (males) or in sports bras (females) to wear body paint. Face paint is allowed along as the student’s identity is recognizable.

Students in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program-If your student was in the program last year you have until Sept 30, 2014 to reapply for free and reduced lunches for the 2014-2015 school year. 9/30 Lascuito

The Francis Howell School District has designated the following days, in the 2014-15 school calendar, as make up days, for snow or other inclement weather. We ask that families, please avoid scheduling vacations or other events on these dates, so that your children will not have to miss school should we need to use these days for makeup.
