Historical Drama “Mercy Street” Adds Josh Radnor to Roster

Actor Josh Radnor will return to the small screen after TV comedy How I Met Your Mother ended over a year ago. He will be appearing in the Civil War drama Mercy Street which will be produced by Ridley Scott; director of Aliens, Gladiator, and Prometheus.

Mercy Street revolves around two nurses from the war. One for the South and the other for the North. The nurses are Emma Green(Hannah James) a supporter of the south, and Mary Phinney(Mary Elizabeth Winstead) a New England citizen. Josh Radnor will be playing Jedediah Foster; A civilian surgeon who was raised in the south and grew up around slavery. He was born to a wealthy landowner in Maryland.

I’m excited to see how PBS

will show both sides of the country during a time of war. The characters will bring out perspectives for both sides either creating conflicts or uniting the two. Although I’m still unsure how Radnor’s character will fit into the divided concept of the show, I’m enthusiastic to see how it works.

My main concern is with Radnor though. His biggest role as Ted Mosby in the comedy series How I Met Your Mother has stapled him as an awkward yet lovable comedic relief. Yes it is just a character, however, it will be hard to acknowledge his as a whole new character in a drama. Radnor did play Ted very well. The transition for me may just take an episode or two.

The diverse cast should play an interesting role in the interactions between the characters. This will make for fascinating connections and engrossing subplots.
Mercy Street is set to have its premiere winter of 2016 on the sunday night schedule along with the final season of Downton Abbey.
