Last week, Nov. 9 to Nov. 13, was the annual DECA week, a spirit week that the club puts on for its members and students of the school. This year’s DECA week was different than previous years because the officers decided to change it up.

“The officers decided that doing dress-up days wouldn’t be effective because there are so many other spirit weeks in October and November,” junior Rebecca Purcell said.

Because of the many other dress-up days in November, the club decided to change the week to revolve around different activities rather than dressing up. On Monday, the officers hid DECA diamonds all around the school, and the student that found the most won free Otis Spunkmeyer cookies every day during the week. Tuesday, the marketing classes were required to dress in business formal wear to perform a practice role play in front of a judge. Members were encouraged to share selfies in their “Dress for Success” wear on social media with #FHNDECA for a chance to win a gift card. On Wednesday, the officers collected donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association during homeroom. The homeroom that collected the most money won a donut party during the following week. Thursday was DECA Jump-off day, where players were encouraged to wear their t-shirts during the day and all students were encouraged to attend the game. Lastly, members were encouraged to wear their DECA t-shirts on Friday and share photos with their friends for a chance to win a gift card.

“By doing activities instead of dress-up days, we are promoting DECA in a way that all students are able to get involved because it’s interesting and we are offering an incentive for them,” senior Anthony Lupo said.

The club holds their spirit week in November because it is known as DECA month worldwide. The week is also centered around the annual Jump-Off, which all students are encouraged to play in. Players paid $10.00 to participate. The event started at 6:00 p.m. on Nov. 12th in the large gym, and admission was $3.00.

“I think the turnout was better than years before,” senior Anna Chowning said. “The students and staff were excited and ready to play.”
