The last meeting for Fellowship of Christian Athletes was held last night, May 16 at Laurel Park. It was a bittersweet night for many of the club members since it was the last meeting held until next fall when school begins again, but for many others it would be their last FCA meeting of their high school lives. FCA contained 20 active senior members.

“I’m literally going to miss every aspect of FCA from the fellowship to the food. I’m going to miss everything,” senior huddle leader Abbey Grone said.

The last meeting was spent by saying the last good-byes to the seniors before they leave and reminiscing all the great times and friendships that were made while they were there. The seniors were called one by one to stand in front of the other members to be roasted about the funny memories that has occurred over the years of FCA.

“I liked being able to tell each senior the kind of impact they made in my life and sharing all the stories with everyone and hearing everyone else share their stories too,” junior Ashley Butterfield said.

Most of the Huddle Leaders are seniors this year and as sad as they are about leaving they are excited about seeing how the upcoming leaders do and how FCA will progress over the next years.

“This was my first year part of FCA and Abbey Grone actually convinced me to come and I have made so many new friendships and now I’m taking her spot of Huddle leader next year. Even though I am going to miss her, I am excited to follow in her footsteps,” sophomore huddle leader Tiffany Metts said.

For the first time, the students and staff of FHN can send kisses to a senior of their choice. Hershey Kisses that is. With “Kiss a Senior Goodbye,” students can send a small bag of Hershey Kisses and a letter to the senior. Over 200 kisses will be delivered May 18 during first hour.

“We really wanted to do something new that no other class had done before,” senior class president Sarah Teson said. “We chose to do this because seniors leaving are such a big deal, and so many of the seniors have so many underclassmen friends, and it was a way for them to get a formal goodbye in.”

This idea came about when Teson was researching fundraiser ideas on the Internet. When she came across a school doing a similar activity, she decided that it would be a good way to say goodbye to all of the seniors.

“It’s nice to give some warm, heartfelt messages goodbye to our seniors,” senior class sponsor Lorraine Smith said. “A chance for parents to write a nice little note to their kid.”

Many students also participated in “Kiss a Senior Goodbye.” While Senior Week is usually reserved for seniors only, underclassmen had the chance to participate by sending a kiss. Junior Abigail Hoffman thought the idea was great and wants to see it implemented in future years.

“I think it’s really cool that we’re able to say our last goodbye to them,” Hoffman said. “I would send one to just let them know that I’m really sad that they’re leaving and just thank them for everything they’ve done for me.”

Colors’ most popular flavors of yogurt are white cake and yellow cake. Once you pick the flavor you want, you can go through all of the toppings and put as much or as little as you want. They have sugar free options, a sorbet-base non-dairy flavor, plus regular fat-free yogurt options everyday.

“We are different from the other frozen yogurt places because we have better customer service,” Assistant Manager Alex Beck said. “We try to connect to the customers and we change our flavors more often.”

After only being open for two months, Colors stands out to FHN sophomore Adriana Condren.

“Colors is a fun place to get yogurt,” Condren said. “There is a good variety of choices of frozen yogurt. I like how you get to choose your own toppings, and it has a good vibe.”

During the ceremony, students were called in alphabetical order. After being given their ring, they got to took walk through an life-size inflatable class ring. The ceremony also included breakfast from McDonald’s.

Along with their class ring that they ordered, sophomores received a t-shirt, a ring pop, a necklace with a ring pendant and a box for their ring. After everyone received their ring, students were able to compare their rings to others.

“I liked looking at each other’s rings and seeing what everyone else got,” sophomore Rayna Jacobs said. “I liked comparing styles and seeing how different their ring is from mine.”

Sophomore delegate sponsor Diane Fingers believes this year’s ceremony ran more smoothly compared to previous years due to the lack of students purchasing rings.

“We had plenty of time to carry out the ceremony this year,” Fingers said. “There were less kids who attended.”

In past years, there has usually been around 200 to 250 sophomores who participate in the ceremony. This year, only 151 sophomores were present. Fingers believes that because of economic times, this number has greatly decreased.

“I can’t tell you how many times today I’ve heard kids say ‘I wanted to get one, but we just couldn’t afford it,” Fingers said.

Fingers believes that the rings are special to the students because it’s something they will always appreciate. She thinks that giving students their rings earlier in high school also benefits them.

“It gives the kids extra time to show all that they’ve put on it. I think it’s a really special time for them,” Finger said. “They enjoy it, it’s also a right of passage, some people will wear their rings their entire lives.”

Sophomore class president Caitlyn Gardner believes the ceremony went well and thought everyone who attended enjoyed themselves.

“Everyone seemed to be having a good time,” Gardner said. “I think [the ceremony] is important because it’s a symbol of high school and a memory making experience.”

Sport: Track

Event: Pole Vaulting

Grade: 12

Danielle Meyer

The FHNtoday.com crew sat down with Varsity Pole Vaulter Danielle Meyer for a small Q&A about her track career.

FHNtoday.com: How long have you been doing track?

Danielle Meyer: I have been doing track since my freshman year.

FHNtoday.com: What events have you participated in for track and field?

DM: My freshman and sophomore year I ran the 4×800, 1600, and did pole vaulting, and in the past two years I just participated in pole vaulting.

FHNtoday.com: What was your favorite event that you participated in and why?

DM: Pole vaulting is my favorite because it is an individual sport and you can see how your hard work pays off. Pole vaulting is the only sport I look forward to going to practice every day because we work hard, but at the same time we have a lot of fun doing whatever we want.

FHNtoday.com: What was your favorite experience that you had while doing track?

DM: My favorite experience was getting third place in districts this year and making it to sectionals. The past two years I got fifth place in districts and It felt good to finally make top four.

FHNtoday.com: What do you do to ensure success?

DM: I work hard at practice and do everything I can to keep getting better. Even after practice is over I do conditioning and sprint workouts on the weekends or after I go home.

FHNtoday.com: What is your Personal Record (PR) for this track session?

DM: For pole vaulting I have made ten feet in a meet and ten and a half feet at practice.

FHNtoday.com: What are you looking forward to in the next couple weeks remaining?

DM: I’m looking forward to hopefully going to state. It’s been my goal for the past three years so it’s kind of a big deal.

FHNtoday.com: What is the height you are hoping to achieve at sectionals for pole vaulting?

DM: I hope to jump ten and a half feet so that can be my official PR, but jumping eleven feet is my dream.

FHNtoday.com: What motivates you to achieve your goals?

DM: I enjoy coming to practice every day and when I think about how much work I have put into the sport it makes me want to prove that it’s all paid off.
