So, we all know that we have been getting some really nice weather lately. I know all of the stores have their swimsuits and shorts out on the racks already. I even bought a pair of white shorts just the other day.The anticipation of spring is in the air. I know it’s hard to resist the bright patterns and cute dresses hanging in your closet, but you have to hold out. It is still February.

We still have another month before we should even think about breaking out the sandals. Just because it is 65 degrees outside doesn’t mean it’s summer. I understand that we are all tired of our sweaters and heavy coats, but we can’t put them away quite yet. This is Missouri and we all know how unpredictable the weather can be. It is still winter. The ground hog even said so, so for the next six weeks save up your spring clothes and keep them in your closet. Do not be wearing short shorts to school. It is winter.

Just because it is warm outside does not always mean that it is warm inside. Something I have never understood is why when people are going to school, why they dress for the weather outside. You are going to be outside for maybe 5 minutes of your school day. You are going to walk in, then, seven hours later, you’re going to walk out. Wear jeans, bring a jacket, it is always going to be cold in school. Then come late March, April, and May when you get home from school is when you should change into your summer/spring attire.

After the library found disparities in their budget, and was forced to cancel the North Street Coffeehouse,

After realizing that there wasn’t enough money in the library budget, the library staff had a tough decision to make: cancel the highly anticipated Coffeehouse, or make the technological improvements needed to turn the library into a hub for electronic devices and optimum studying. A unanimous decision between Angie Gunnell and Michelle Stuerman canceled the Coffeehouse to make the needed library improvements.

“We are in the process of making a written plan to update the library into a twenty first century library,” said Gunnell.

When StuCo heard the news of the Coffeehouse being canceled, Student Council members went to their sponsors to see if there was a possibility that the organization could take charge of the event instead. For weeks, cabinet members and officers conferred about the logistics of the event and whether it would fit into their already filled schedules or not.

“We had to see if it would fit in our schedule,” cabinet member Alex Oppenborn said. “We still had to talk to performers, make t-shirts, food, timing.”

This past Wednesday, after two weeks of discussion on the issue, the officers made the decision to take over the planning phase of the event.

“We are in the preliminary workings,” StuCo sponsor Jani Wilkens said. “Grimshaw and I are asking to see if there is enough interest.”

Even though the final decision has been made, there is still a lot of work to do to prepare for this event. The only main thing that seems to be changing for this year’s Coffeehouse is the timing. Instead of during school day, StuCo has decided to hold it at night, in order to maintain the school schedule. With the new format, parents of performers will be able to see their children performing in the venue.

“[The only thing that’s changing] is just that we’re running it,” said Oppenborn. “We will still have the art displays and all that jazz that goes with it.”

When the library initially canceled the Coffeehouse, many students who were planning to perform were disappointed and some had even been rehearsing for their performance.

One of the main problems with canceling the Coffeehouse for performers was that North didn’t have any other way for them to express themselves and show off their talents to their friends and peers.

“The Coffeehouse is one of the few ways students have to express themselves and if that is taken away, then there’s no way for kids to stand out,” junior Ellen Cracraft said. “I was disappointed because I was looking forward to performing.”

On Monday, Feb. 6, five members of the Westboro Baptist Church arrived at Clayton High School to protest the school’s Gay Straight Alliance that contradicts their beliefs.Five minutes before the Westboro Baptist Church picketers arrived, hundreds of counter protesters arrived as well. Demonstrations began and church picketers and counter protesters stood on the damp ground, chanting and singing through the fog.

“They didn’t even have the courtesy to come in March,” counter protester Tamela DeMent said, “when at least the weather is nice.”

School started and, along with parents and other counter protest supporters, many students were also outside supporting their fellow peers involved in GSA. The two groups of counter protesters and protesters were divided by a buffer zone of approximately 30 feet with at least ten police officers standing by.

“We did a lot of planning. We made sure we separated the two,” Clayton Police Department Chief Tom Byrne said, “We expected a peaceful protest and it was.”

The church members were unavailable for comment, but they announced on their website that they planned to arrive at 6:30 to protest at Fort Zumwalt East and 7:50 at Clayton. The members never went to FZE but arrived at Clayton before 8 am.

Many of the counter protesters heard the news of the protest through social media and news. Counter protester Jennifer Grotpeter, who had previously participated in environmental protests, felt the need to support GSA members after hearing about the protest through social media . With Grotpeter were her young children.

“The kids have school soon, but I think you’re never too young to see social justice,” Grotpeter said.

Cheering rang throughout the FHN gymnasium this morning as the school celebrated its annual winter pep assembly and as Seniors Katie Hammann and Brady Hawkes were recognized as this year’s Snowcoming king and queen.

“I thought that they deserved it,” Senior Sarah Miller said.

This year’s pep assembly only consisted of one spirit meter, unlike past years when there were multiple. This year there were many games played at the pep assembly between the classes like a three-legged race, balloon relay, freeze dance and “Who am I?” which is a game where students had to guess what teacher was shown in a baby picture.

“I thought it was funny to see baby pictures of the teachers,” Sophmore Chris Cattron said. “Next time they should do embarrassing photos of teachers.”

The assembly also consisted of performances by the Freshman, JV, and varsity cheerleaders as well as JV Knightline, and varsity Knightline, which featured Studline.

“Studline was my favorite performance because they were entertaining and it was funny,” Junior Monica Cattron said. “This was the best dance I have seen them do.”
