Dulaney reenacts revolutionary war

She’s about to become someone else.

Junior Amanda Dulaney stares at the long, white and green dress and matching corset, thinking about how it feels like the hundredth time in her life she will chose to leave herself for a short period of time and become someone else. Yet not just anyone else. She will become a woman of the Revolutionary war.

For what she recalls as her entire life, Dulaney has participated in reenactments with her family. A few times a year, she travels to different camps across Illinois to reenact events and situations from America’s revolution.

During these events, the 17-year-old participates in as many acts as she can, allowing herself many different experiences. She might choose to help in one of the main battles, or perhaps help with her grandfather’s cannon crew. Whatever she decides, she’s always satisfied.

“It’s just a really cool experience,” Dulaney said. “Doing it has allowed me a lot of things. I’ve always loved history so it really pays off.”

Though the experience may be rewarding to her, some who have known Dulaney and her family can be less then supportive.

“I’ve gotten, ‘you’re those weird people who wear those funny outfits, aren’t you?’” Dulaney recalls. “But I think they’re nice.”

The reenacting tradition started with Dulaney’s grandfather, who would put up different history display tents for the National Guard, displaying items such as rifles and uniforms. Liking the reaction he got, he began reenacting different events from the Revolution period and influencing his family to follow in the same direction.

For Dulaney, this has become not just something to do on occasion, but rather a way of life.

“I’ve just grown up with this around me,” Dulaney said. “I’ve grown up with people in this and I have an intense connection with them. I would never trade this in for anything. I would choose this over a party on a Friday night any day.”
