Pineapple Express

How could a movie about a process server and his drug-dealing pal running from a corrupt drug lord and his minions be the funniest movie of the summer? Well, then again, how couldn’t it be?

In yet another Judd Apatow film, Seth Rogan plays another down on his luck character that is just trying to make it through life with little difficulty, although his life has been drastically changed. Although Rogan is a brilliant comedic actor, James Franco – who generally wins critics over with his teary-eyed performances – steals the show with his blood shot-eyed performance.

Whether he’s running maniacally through a heavily-wooded forest or steering a hijacked police cruiser with one of his legs jutting out of the windshield, Franco makes every seen comical. It’s not just that this role isn’t the norm for Franco, but it’s also that he plays the part of a marijuana-addicted hippie so well – his smile and swagger are quite convincing.

Rogan and Franco shine as pals and eventually pull you far enough into their friendship that you somehow begin to feel their bond. At one point in the film when they separate, you immediately want them to rejoin forces so that you can continue to laugh and grin.

Although the plot may be somewhat contrived, the ridiculous idea of the movie makes it all the more interesting to watch. And there may be more violence than in previous Apatow productions (one brutal fight scene makes your gut bust with laughter while you grind your teeth with pain) but that helped make this flick unique.

With enough warmth to make you hug your BFF, enough laughter to give you a hernia, and enough brutality to make you cover your eyes like a schoolgirl watching The Shining, this movie is well on its way to becoming this summer’s Superbad.
