The lights dim, cheerleaders stretch, and football players run passes while fans fill
up the stadium.
Friday knight football games have become a tradition to students,
parents, and athletes. They will soon be a part of life to the freshmen at FHN.
On August 29, there will be a special event in the football stadium for freshmen and their
mentors only.
“Basically what we want to do is encourage freshmen socializing during and outside
school,” mentor sponsor Anne McPartland said.
The day will be filled with funny events, such as a water balloon toss, sack races, and a
Bazooka bubble gum blowing contest. There will be dance music, like the Cha
Cha Slide playing on the speakers. The concession stand will open early for
students to buy cheaply-priced snacks. Overall, it’ll be a fun time!
“Once the freshmen come, they’ll receive a bracelet to let them in the event and the fun
and music will make them want to stay,” McPartland stated.
The stadium will be open at 5:00 P.M. All freshmen who bring their student ID and show
up before 5:30 P.M. will get into the Freshmen Festivities and varsity game
for free. The relays and events will last an hour and then freshmen and all mentors
will stay for the game free of charge.
“The purpose is to create another opportunity for ninth graders to be a part of FHN in a
social event, while being supported by their mentor leaders,” McPartland
announced.
Junior and Senior mentors are promoting until Friday, hoping all freshmen take up the
one-time chance to be together in one major activity. The mentors and Freshmen
will compete against each other. The students will be able to challenge their
friends and win silly prizes.
“I think it’s a good idea, and it will be fun,” freshmen Katy Friedlein said.
The interaction with friends and upperclassmen mentors should help kick-off a
memorable four years along with the football season.
“I want them to feel welcomed, included, and see what fun everyone is having
and be a part of it,” McPartland said.
