Taking a deeper look at teacher Bryan Spencer’s political involvement

as told to Betsy Blanchard

Q:How were you involved in Huckabee’s campaign?
A:I was on the ground force in Iowa that entails

calling people in the Ottawa area. I went door to door, I attended rallies, and I would sit in on other public events. We would go and take notes of other candidates in the area. I went to Obama’s rally and took notes. I went to Romney’s rally and took notes. I was kinda like a spy….but a legal one.

Q:When and how did you first become involved in politics?
A:I first became involved in High School when I ran for Central Missouri Regional Fair Board. That put me in the spotlight and I’d have to run different programs and events for the community. I also worked local campaigns and my dad ran for county commissioner. In college I was working on a Social Science degree and my college professor approached me about doing an internship for a press candidate. At that time it was Dick Gebhardt. There I worked in Iowa and New Hampshire. Those were my two main areas. Of course Gephardt was a Democrat, and that was when I realized I was a Republican.

Q:Did you ever meet Huckabee?
A:Oh yes, several times.

Q:How did you become involved in his campaign?
A:I was involved in the St. Charles Young Republicans, and candidates come all the time to ask for help.

Q:What did you do at the N.E.A. Republic Leadership Conference?
A:I attended classes on being an effective lobbyist. We also worked on Republican educational issues. We met with different Governors and Congressmen and we collaborated with other Republican teachers from across the country.

Q:What issues are most important to you?
A:Well, there are several different types of voters. There are one-issue voters. There are some teachers that will vote on educational issues and consider nothing else. I’m more of an issue-voter, where I look at all the issues and I may have to give up something to get a little more of something else. You’ll find that no two politicians will agree on everything or every issue. And I’m the same way.

Q:What do you hope to see at the end of this election?
A:I hope McCain wins!
