Final practice provides preview of game day

Whistles were blown, flags were pulled, girls were screaming. For hundreds of juniors and seniors, last night was their third and final practice before the Powderpuff game on Oct. 1.
The seniors, who have been in this scenario before, were described as “organized” by the co-coordinator of Powderpuff, Mike Kenny, while the juniors were said to be “much improved since their first practice a week ago.”
“Once [the juniors and seniors] got into the swing of things, they looked great,” Kenny said. “This is right where they need to be for their final practice.”
While coaches were reading and re-reading their sketchbook of plays, the junior and senior girls were playing football like it was game day.
“This is the best final practice I’ve ever seen,” co-coordinator Diane Holmes said. “Everyone was doing something. And it helps that we have such great, hard-working coaches.”
With about a half hour left in their last practice, both teams took on the full field for the first time. While the juniors were displaying a quick-moving offense, the seniors were showing a preview of their flag-tearing defense. As in most sports, both teams have strengths and weaknesses that they hope will be ironed out come game day.
“I think our defense has improved since the first day,” senior line backer Alison Cooke said, “and I think we’re definitely going to step up the intensity during the game.”
Before the coaches and players left the field, predictably, chants of “Oh nine!” and “One oh!” could be heard on both ends of the field. It’s apparent that most of the girls won’t mind getting a little muddy, dirty or sweaty next Wed. after the Homecoming Parade.
