With the highly anticipated election quickly approaching this Nov., members of the Young Democrats club have geared up and begun holding meetings and planning out events. The club, which was created last year along with the Young Republicans club, focuses on contemporary issues such as the economy, health care and education. While last year they worked on getting its foundation started, this year its focus is the election.

“As of right now, we’re holding meetings about the debate between the Democrats and Republicans,” senior member Muhammad Dulal said. “It went really good last year, and it’s important because if people come to watch the debate, we can really show them what the Democrats stand for and get people thinking.”

While the Republicans have focused on volunteering to work at local McCain rallies, the Democrats have turned their attention primarily to the student body.
“We’re looking into getting people involved with the campaign,” senior member Allison Cooke said. “But the school is the main focus right now.”

As the election draws closer, the Democrats will be working on getting flyers printed and announcements made to get people involved. Their main goal: getting students to attend the meetings, which are held every Tuesday morning in sponsor Melissa Trochim’s room.
“We’re always looking for new members,” Dulal said. “We’re really trying to get more people involved with the club. Ours is relatively small, but we still have a lot of good people involved.”
