Knights fall short at Gold Cup

The referees prepare to drop the puck, the crowds go crazy. With adrenaline pumping, they look up into the eyes of their opponent. The opposition is wearing the jersey of their brother school, Francis Howell High. It was time to play. It was time for Gold Cup.

The Knight’s hockey team took the ice Saturday, Nov. 1, against Francis Howell. Unfortunately, the Knights couldn’t get anything going after giving up three goals in the first period and fell to the rival Vikings, 5-0. The Knights defense did a good job getting the puck out of the zone and their goalie, junior Robbie Friedlein had a good game.

“Robbie played really well,” senior Matt Knobbe said, ”but you can’t stop them all.”

However, they struggled to generate any sort of offensive pressure against the Howell defense.

“It was kind of an eye opener,” senior Jimmy Rueschhoff said. “We are going to have to up the tempo of our practices.”

Although just a pre-season game, many consider the game the most important game of the year.

“Gold cup is how we get our year started,” Knobbe said. “It gets our fans and our players excited for the season. We had a good amount of fans watch the game. It’s like our biggest game of the year but it means nothing”

The Knights have high hopes for their next game on Friday, Nov. 14, against South.

“We have a young team,” Knobbe said. “It’ll be tough, but I think most of our games will be close.”

The puck drops at 9:10 p.m. in Wentzville.
