Varsity wrestlers hopeful after Holt loss

On Wednesday Dec. 3, the wrestling team opened their season in a duel at Wentzville-Holt, which has had a class 3A-AA State Champion wrestling team for the past two years. Holt’s team consisted of two state champs, two second place finishers, a third, a fourth placer and two state qualifiers. The Knights fought well, but in the end, they got caught in difficult positions, causing them to get pinned. The team finished with wins by three of their twelve wrestlers and lost with a final score of 61 to 16.

“Actually, I’m not that disappointed,” coach Sean Fowler said. “It’s a great team; they have one of the greatest coaching staffs in the state. The big difference tonight was when we got in good positions we hesitated, and they didn’t. Against some of their best guys our guys held up but then they hesitated.”
Senior Eric Voyles, wrestling at the 160 weight class, pinned his opponent in the second period and sophomore Tom Foley, at the 285 weight class, pinned his opponent in the third period.  Senior Valery Cassetta beat his opponent by 10 points with a final of 13 to three.
“The team did pretty well; I have no complaints,” Foley said. “They had a lot of good wrestlers and we put up some good fights. I am happy I have proved myself as a Varsity wrestler. This match really boosted my confidence.”
This weekend the Varsity and JV squad will be traveling to Parkway South to compete in a two-day tournament.
