Sweat, bruises, injuries – the love of my life – dancing.
Some say that the art of dance does not meet the standards of a sport.
It is said by some that dancing is just a couple of ditsy blondes in ‘froo-froo’ tutus. For all those football players and buff weight lifters out there, learn the meaning of sport. According to dictionary.com, a sport is “an athletic activity requiring skill and physical endurance, often with a competitive nature.”
The key words here are “skill” and “physical endurance.”
Just as a basketball player spends endless hours each night mastering a three-pointer or lay-up, a dancer trains every night, repeating one simple step over and over, with their forehead covered in water droplets of hard work.
Perhaps one could argue, however, that dancing gives too much fun to be called a sport. Well, I say: Why work so hard at something if it isn’t going to make you happy? Can’t you have fun while working hard?
So, to all of you with your stereotypical comments, I stand by my word. Dance is a sport; a bruising, loving, blistering sport.
