Coil heads to Canada with family

Labeled boxes lie all around and the walls become barer as the packing continues. A wife, a mother, and most importantly a teacher begins to look back at the life and

career that she is temporarily leaving behind.

Around Dec. 29, Kimberly Coil, who has never lived outside of Missouri, will move with her husband and her daughter to a North Eastern suburb in Canada. Her husband, Ed Coil, received a promotion as Chief Financial Officer of Emerson-Canada along with the transfer.

“I understand that leaving is a great opportunity for her and her family, but her leaving now is a little more abrupt,” Ryan Johnson, who has taught at Francis Howell North for two years, said.

The school board had to make the decision to let Coil, who teaches World History and American Government, finish teaching throughout the school year, but the school board denied her requests, meaning Coil would have to leave at semester.

“We were definitely hoping that she could finish off the year so she could see [the seniors] at graduation and stuff,” senior Nicole Hume,  who has known Coil as a teacher and friend for over a year, said.

Although Coil will miss her friends, family and students, she has many things to look forward to.

“I’m excited,” Coil said. “I’m going to see all kinds of places I’ve wanted to see and haven’t had the opportunity, like Niagara Falls; upstate New York; Michigan; Banff, Canada; and whatever else I can find.”

Although Coil is excited for the adventure, staff members and students have a lot to miss.

“She’s personable,” Johnson said. “I think that she gets along pretty well with faculty and students. She tries to do things that are applicable for students and she makes teaching interesting. I think she’s definitely a leader. She’s very active in FEA. She advocates for other teachers. She’s definitely a teacher’s teacher. She helps others and ran some good programs while she was here.”

While Coil is ready for the move, she’s not sure how her daughter Alison, who’s only in second grade, will adapt to the big change.

“She’s excited and a little apprehensive now that it’s getting close,” Coil said. “But, we promised her that she could decorate her own bedroom and we would try to find a house that has kids in the neighborhood because our house now doesn’t.”

Coil won’t do much working in Canada, so she’ll have to learn how to spend her money wisely, but it also makes her want to be ready for what’s to come when she returns home again. She hopes to come back to North, but will also apply at Fort Zumwalt West and Wentzville Timberland because they are closer to her house. No matter what, it’s teaching she’ll return to. The students appreciate her for that.

“She’s very caring toward each student. She’ll meet their individual needs and do many different types of learning skills so that everybody can learn,” senior and president of Future Educators of America Katie Coffey said.

Coil’s absence will affect many. Her ways of teaching and her valuable companionship will be hard to replace.

“Well, it’s just the two of us in this hallway, so it’s like our own little world down here,” Johnson said. “It’s going to be sad with half of that world missing. Now I’m going to have to get used to someone new.”

It’s the start of a new beginning, and she’s got friends along with her to back her up.

“She’s probably one of my closest friends here at school leaving and we work together on projects and assignments and I’ll miss her, but hopefully she’ll be back in a few years,” William Crow, who has known Coil for 18 years said.
