Walking into the Rec-Plex on Feb. 3, it was not the average site for a fan of the Lady Knights swim team. At 3:30 p.m., eight different teams covered the deck with excitement for the meet they were about to participate in. Fort Zumwalt North’s swim team hosts the Panther Relays every year for the Zumwalt District, Howell District, and St. Dominic.
While a normal swim meet consists of only three relays, this meet consisted of 12 events, all relays, with two of them being a little out of the ordinary. One relay was swam with a t-shirt on and each swimmer had to pass the t-shirt to the next person before continuing the race. Seniors Lauren Thrasher, Caitlin Stone, Vicki Viehman, and Kayla Thoma won this event by a lap. Juniors Lizzie Johnson and Kaitlyn Rutledge, and seniors Maggie Officer and Brenna O’leary swam and placed third in the corkscrew relay.
“It was the most fun so far because of all the relays,” Rutledge said. “Twelve out of 25 of us got medals, so it was pretty cool.”
Besides the two “fun” relays, the Lady Knights swimmers also placed in the Varsity 200 meter freestyle, the freshman and sophomore 200 meter freestyle, the 4×50 meter butterfly, and the freshman and sophomore 400 meter freestyle.
