From India to America, Rani has found her place

On Nov. 26, 1994 25-year-old Harsha Rani prepared to come to the U.S from New Delhi, India. Her husband, Prathamesh Shah, got a job offer with a software programmer. She had to leave behind her parents, her brother, and her teaching career at a middle school and high school.

“My first reaction was that I was happy for him,” Rani said. “He was getting a big opportunity, career wise. But at the same time I was kind of sad because I was going to miss my family, my job in India and the students.”
She arrived in Sacramento, Cali. after a 24-hour flight.
“It was a long and tiring flight,” Rani said. “But I was excited because I was going to see new people and places.”
After three and a half years of living in California, she had to move again. This time she headed to Missouri because her husband got another job offer with AT&T.
“It was a little hard at first because I liked California,” Rani said. “But afterwards it was fine.”
After moving to Missouri, Rani applied at the Rockwood School District where she became a substitute teacher. After two years at Rockwood, she applied for a job at North and got accepted. Today she teaches Physical Science in room Com. 6.
“I like her,” freshman Sam Scott said. “She doesn’t assign a lot of homework.”
The teaching style in India is a bit different than the teaching style in America. In India, the schools are set up like a college campus with grades kindergarten through 12. Also, in India, the teachers change classes instead of the students.
Despite the differences, Rani enjoys her new job at North.
“I feel really fortunate to be living and teaching here,” Rani said.”Especially here at FHN: great teachers, great students, and a great place to learn each and every day.”
