Self expression through appearance may improve society

Some people use paint; others use music. Others, still, use their body and the way they dress to express themselves. I think we all need a way to unleash the way we feel inside. Each individual chooses a different method; some methods are highly frowned upon by today’s society.

I can appreciate the artist selling their art for gas money and the musician on the street with his guitar case upon hoping for a few coins. But I personally choose to express myself with the way I dress and the way I present myself. As I am sure the majority of the school saw, I have recently chosen to color my hair highlighter orange.

To me, it is a form of self expression. I can mutate, if you will, my hair into many things to express my internal feelings and rebellions. Though some people color their hair and style it certain ways to fit into a certain clique or to be “in,” others, like me, choose to do it to stand out from the crowd and show the world what we’re all about.

But then again, sometimes this expression can be taken the wrong way. First impressions are a big deal in our fast-paced world and at first glance someone will judge you and think they know you simply by the way you dress and the way you walk. I do not agree with this fact but I have often known it to be true and have come to accept it, and ignore it.

If I want to have orange hair, I will. And if I wear my jeans a little tight, then so be it. I present myself in a way that I see fit and how I want to be perceived. I think if more people dressed the way they wanted to instead of how they think they have to, we would see a lot more variations and we could learn a little more about everyone instead of guessing.
