On Saturday, Feb. 14, students in Winterguard gave up their weekend and Valentine’s Day in order to compete at Blue Springs South. Out of 27 groups from different schools, FHN came out in first place.
“We hadn’t seen any of the teams perform before, so we didn’t know what to expect,” sophomore Sarah Sutton said. “We also had some bad practices, so we were kind of nervous.”
Regardless of prior nerves, this victory means much more for the team than just a top spot at Blue Springs. With a score of 78, FHN is now the number one Winterguard team in the state.
“We were surprised when we won at Blue Springs,” junior Kaitlyn Schikore said, “especially since our score went up four points from the competition the previous weekend, which is a lot for Guard scores.”
Hopefully continuing the stride, Winterguard will be competeing in Nashville, Tenn. this weekend, Feb. 20-22. Groups from 12 other states will also be there to compete. Sponsor Jeff Moorman is hoping for and expecting another win.
“I’m super excited,” Sutton said. “I’m really hoping we win.”
