On March 7, the band department will be participating in two different competitions. First, solo and ensemble districts will be held at Warrenton. The number of groups competing from FHN is more than double of that from last year, with 35 groups and approximately 60 people attending.
“If we score a one at districts, then we’ll be able to go to State in a few weeks,” sophomore Kayleen Lindstrom said. “The judges are pretty harsh, so I’m a little worried.”
Also competing this weekend is Winterguard at Mehlville High School. After placing third last weekend at a competition in Nashville, Winteguard is now the thirteenth group in the nation.
“I feel more prepared [for Mehlville than Nashville] because we practiced a lot harder and we’re more motivated,” sophomore Megan Oloughlin said. “Our biggest competition should be Kickapoo from Springfield.”
Check back on Monday for the results of these two competitions.
For the first time, FHN will be hosting a competition at school on March 14. It will be an all day event, from about noon-7 p.m. The cost will be $7, or $5 for FHN students. Fifty-two groups from all around Missouri and surrounding states will be competing.
“It’s the first time we’re having it and we’re hoping it runs smoothly so we can have a big fund raiser like this every year,” co-sponsor Jeff Moorman said. “Mainly so the kids won’t have to pay so darn much for everything.”
