Criminal lawyer speaks to government class about rights

When you hear the name Michael Devlin, I’m sure your stomach turns a little. Devlin was the man who allegedly abducted Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby. On Friday, February 28, Michael Devlin’s lawyer, Michael Kielty, came to speak in front of Mr. Crow’s government classes.

Kielty came to speak about the rights we have as Americans. He spoke about how the police often try to take advantage of people who do not know their rights, and why you should always get a lawyer. However, many students were curious about his involvement with the Devlin case and asked many questions about it.

“Why would you want to defend Michael Devlin?” a student asked.

Kielty replied, “I had to think about his family. He has a very nice family, and they were stressed out at the time.”

Kielty concluded his speech by telling the students to know their rights and to remember to use them when you need to.
