Friedman says technology, future freaks her out

As most of you know, some school computers crashed on Friday causing a little bit of chaos. Though the day was not too terribly interrupted, there were some lessons and plans that had to be rearranged.

Apparently at night, the computers are frequently loaded with new software and other things, but these programs seemed to be unresponsive and caused some problems. Now, I know that they will be fixed and life will go on, but it really makes me realize how dependent we have become on technology.

Whether you agree or not, it is obvious that facebook and myspace have pretty much taken over and cell phones seem like a necessity. Personally, I hate phones and think that it is rude when people are on them constantly. I don’t even enjoy talking to some of my friends anymore because they are so busy texting someone else. The most obnoxious part about it though, is how lazy and cowardly everyone has become because of all of these gadgets. People seriously use texting and messaging for everything instead of simply talking to one another. Some don’t even talk in person at all and use texting as their only means of communication. Am I really the only one that sees a problem with this I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t use a keyboard to let out my emotions and the computer to keep me from actual confrontation. Don’t get me wrong, I have things just like everyone else, but I know when enough is enough and how to be courteous to others.

My point: If we’ve already become this dependent on simple technological advancements, what does that mean for the future? We are continuosly creating new things and it feels like it is only a matter of time before we won’t have to do anything for ourselves…except for maybe at the push of a button. I don’t know how far it will go from here and I’m not quite sure that I’m ready for it. Are you?
