Festivities set to begin for St. Patrick’s Day

In mentioning St. Patrick’s Day, thoughts of shamrocks, leprechauns and everything Irish come to mind. Everyone tends to wear green, so that they won’t get pinched. But in all the hustle and bustle very few people know that actual meaning of St. Patrick’s Day.

“I usually wear green because I grew up doing it,” junior Kaitlyn Schikore said.

St. Patrick’s Day all started with the St. Patrick himself, who was the patron saint of Ireland. He was the person responsible for bringing the religion of Christianity to Ireland.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17 because it is believed that St. Patrick died on that day. To some, March 17 is just a fun holiday in which they can wear green or just not celebrate it at all. But for others, it’s both a meaningful day of offering their prayers to the missionaries all over the world, and also having loads of fun.

“I don’t do anything for St. Patrick’s because to me it’s not an important holiday,” sophomore Chris Volpo said.
