German Exchange Program hopes to broaden student’s horizons

This year students at FHN have the chance to host a German Exchange student in Fall of 2009 and to travel to Germany to have a German student host them in Summer of 2010.

“I hope that it will be a lot different than here in America, I hope it’s a different experience,” sophomore Samantha Hurrell said.

All students in the school get the chance to host a German student, not just German Club members or foreign language speakers. To get your form to host a German student, go to room 216 and tell Frau McPartland that you would like to be a part of the German Exchange Program. All forms are due no later than Friday, March 6, but will still be accepted the week before Spring Break.

“I went last year and it was probably the most amazing experience of my life,” junior Taylor Robinson said. “We went and saw a lot of different castles, schools, talked to fifth graders, and pretty much their just kids like us in America.”

Even if you don’t want to fly all the way over to Germany, you can still experience it all by hosting a German student in your home. It is like having another sibling that is from a different country.

“Hosting was fun and interesting. You want to go do everything and show them everything but you don’t want to make them exhausted,” Robinson said.

This is Hurrell’s third year studying the German language and her first time getting to experience the German Exchange Program.

“The reason why I decided to do the German Exchange Program this year was because I wanted to meet new people and experience things outside the American culture,” Hurrell said.

On the form, it requires you to answer general questions about yourself that would be nice for your exchange student to know. You need to include a few pictures of yourself along with your form.
