Hunt asks students to reconsider stereotypical spring break plans

Ah, it’s that time of the year. The time when everything comes alive, when everything grows and blossoms. A time for spring. Spring prom. Spring training. And of course, the talk of the week around school…spring break. Yes, it’s finally here.

Many of you may be counting the days. Many of you may be counting the minutes. Spring break is the ultimate freedom and weight lifting off of our shoulders, literally as we will not be carrying heavy books and bags. It’s a time for relaxing, vacationing, and having fun.
Now take a second and define that last one…”having fun.” Many of you may know the typical spring break stereotype of teens. With all of those reality shows of The Ultimate Spring Break or How to Have the Most Fun, how can we not notice the expectations we have already made for ourselves this break? The world and media around us has slowly progressed into a whirlwind of “partying” spring breaks with drinking and dancing.
So does this mean that we have to party and drink like everyone else in order to have “the ultimate spring break”? Does this mean that we have to go to a beach and stay up all night in order to be “cool”? Sure, that makes perfect sense, right?
Not in my mind. My spring break is going to be spent however I please. Your spring break should only be influenced by one person and one person only…you!
Now I’m not saying to never party on your spring break and to avoid any sign of possible festivities on your ten days freedom. That would be just as ridiculous as being the non-stop party-er. However, if you want to spend your break dancing until dawn and sleeping until dinner, then you go ahead and go for it. Make sure this is what you want for your break though, not what MTV wants.
Friday is your first day of this so-called freedom. As you wake up and turn on that television to MTV or that radio to the nearest station, what will you be listening to? On your first day of this so-called freedom, what will you do?
