Take a stroll down memory lane with me. Open up your old scrapbooks and pull out those dusty family vacation photo albums. Look at those family portraits from reunions and holidays.


Now, take a second and mentally delete those brothers and sisters standing beside you in those old Polaroids. That’s right; you no longer have siblings (figuratively of course).
See, I’m an only child.
Now some of you are probably thinking “good riddance to those brats” or “finally my own room and car.” But, in reality, would you really choose something like transportation or privacy over a human being, your own blood, your own name? These people share the same mother and father with you, the same house, the same morals. How much do you tell your siblings compared to all of those secrets you work to keep from your parents. Don’t you ever have those late night talks that you spend in your sibling’s room about “stuff” that you can only talk to them about? Some conversations are just meant for another sibling.
Don’t get me wrong, I have my own room, my own car, and my own phone. However, I will be the last to agree to the popular saying that only children are “spoiled brats.” I work just as much as the next. In fact, I do more chores than most with siblings. Think about it, more working hands equal less time spent working. And I’ve called many of my friends at two in the morning to talk about “late night stuff.” Still, some things can only be understood by your own flesh and blood in your own household.
All I’m saying is enjoy those standing next to you in those dusty photographs. Even now as you grow either apart or closer each year, take time to be thankful for the person(s) whose bedroom is just right across the hall.
