On Sunday, March 8 at 5 p.m. the Missouri Youth Orchestra and the Saint Charles County Youth Orchestra performed with Mark O’Connor in Columbia, Mo. in Jesse Hall, located on the Mizzou campus.
With an orchestra composed of over 100 students took to the stage to perform the Americana Symphony and the Fiddle Concerto. All composed and orchestrated by Grammy Award winner, Mark O’Connor. O’Connor played with the combined youth orchestras during the fiddle concerto, which dazzled not only audience members, but students in the orchestra.
“I really enjoyed getting to hear O’Connor play. He was absolutely amazing,” sophomore Emily Mulawa said.
In order to prepare for this concert, students rehearsed with their own orchestra starting in January and then the students finally met a day before the concert. The students from Missouri Youth and Saint Charles County were very excited to meet others who shared their passion for music. But while it was very exciting meeting others, it was also very stressful.
“The most stressful thing about the concert for me was having to play with so many people I had never played with and I wasn’t used to,” Mulawa said.
The opportunity to play with O’Connor and the musicians from Columbia was very rewarding and challenging for many of the students who went on the trip. Many of the players said they would enjoy having a second concert.
“I would [do it again] because it gave me a chance to play a style of music I don’t normally play. It also let me experience playing with a whole new group of people that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise,” Mulawa said.
