In response to the two competitions this weekend, groups in the band department came back with impressive records. At districts, solo and ensemble had 35 groups in attendance. Out of those 35 groups, 15 scored a one, as well as 20 individuals. This is more than double the record of last year.
“It was freaking sweet [to get two ones],” junior Michael Opich said. “I didn’t know how I pulled it off. Now I get to go to state on May 2 and it looks really good to colleges.”
In addition to the solo and ensemble win, Winterguard also won first place at the Winterguard International competition at Mehlville High School. First place brought them from thirteenth to twelfth place in the nation.
“I’m so excited!” sophomore Megan Oloughlin said. “We’ve never gotten first place before. Hopefully now we can go to championships in three weeks at Willard High School.”
All teams in the band department have been relentlessly hard at work, and it seems to be paying off.
“I’m very proud of all of my students and the efforts that they have put forth,” sponsor Jeff Moorman said. “It shows in their rewards.”
