Senior warns to be cautious as the web advances

Beyond the glass screen, through the highway of wires and connections there lies a great frontier. This frontier is a fast-paced and immediate world, a place where information is available

and ready at the click of a finger and scroll of a mouse. Lives either prosper from the opportunities available or get swept up in the unkempt promises or spiteful revenge, only to wish they never found this digital playground in the first place. We have created both peace and war boxed up in a nice, dainty digital package.

The Internet is no doubt one of the greatest advancements in modern times. By connecting everyone together the web found a way to unite the world. This new digital world, however, is not perfect; it is fraught with nearly the same amount of danger as the real world itself. Lives can both be made on the Internet or taken away.

Bullies have found a new way to torment and taunt their victims. Cyber abuse and bullying is on the rise since the Internet made itself a staple in the family home. It is important to monitor and protect those most at risk.

The Internet provides one thing that the real world does not: complete anonymity. Anyone can be anybody they choose and no one has to know. With opportunities like that it is important to protect yourself, by taking a precautionary approach to who is met online dangerous situations can be avoided. There are scammers and hackers laying in wait to get personal information or unsavory characters hiding in the cyber shadow waiting for the chance to get at those they meet online.

Being able to hide from the outside world is not the only danger of the web. By being who we are online through sites like Facebook and MySpace, the world is given a window into our lives and day-to-day dealings. Be careful of what information is left on sites like these by monitoring content and not posting things that possibly could lead to regret.

In this modern age of technology, watch out for trip wires and find the way through this technological torrent.
