Hard not to ‘love’ new Frat Pack comedy

On Friday, March 20, I Love You, Man hit theaters everywhere. The story follows 30-something Peter Klaven played by Paul Rudd (Anchorman, 40-Year-Old Virgin),

who is in a desperate search for male friends before his wedding.

Along the way, Peter ends up making a fool of himself quite a bit. Truly uncomfortable around the male sex, he makes any situation awkward. After jumping from relationship to relationship his whole life, he neglected making any real friends. Now faced with a wedding that threatens to have no best man, he goes on a series of “man dates” with a cast of interesting guys with the help of his brother played by Andy Samburg. Just before Peter gives up hope, he meets Sidney Fife, played by Jason Segal (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up).

Sidney is a committed bachelor. He spends his time in a garage that he has converted into a “man cave” and is a self-proclaimed “ocean of testosterone.” Slowly, Sidney draws Peter out and they become best friends… but will their friendship threaten Peter’s wedding?

I thought this was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. If you’re a fan of Judd Apatow’s films, you’ll like I Love You, Man. It is really in the same vein as Knocked Up, a coming-of-age tale for older guys trying their hardest to take the next step. Watching Rudd flail around trying to win approval of his fellow men can be hilariously painful. He does a spectacular job of making the viewer feel as awkward as he was, while Segal clearly reflected the viewer’s feelings of, well, trying not to laugh in the guy’s face while trying to help him. It’s definitely a movie I’ve quoted since seeing it, and with so many funny lines, it’s not a stretch to say I’ll be quoting it for a while.

With movie prices what they are, a lot of us have to pick our movies carefully. If you’re looking for a movie in the same vein as Superbad and Knocked Up, checking out I Love You, Man is a sure-fire bet.
