Two students head to YIG Leadership conference

On April 1-3, 35 people swarmed the capital for the Executive Branch Leadership Conference. Freshmen Megan Weber and senior Alix Lewis were among those chosen to go.

The girls qualified by filling out an application about their school and why they wanted to go.

“I have interest in working in the government,” Lewis said. “It’s a great way to help people and I think in the government you get a chance to.”

The purpose of the conference was for youth to get used to the government by partnering with different departments of government.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for students,” Chostner said. “It helps them with their public speaking skills, research skills, and they get to meet executives.”

The participants were broken into groups of three and given a department to work in. Weber was in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Lewis was in the Office of Administration. They wrote proposals and presented their solutions to some of the government and senator heads. Weber argued against the four day school week while Lewis argued that Facebook and MySpace should be used by the government as a form of communication and training.

Weber spent a total of 12-13 hours researching her topic, and it paid off. Her group won third place, winning her a $100 college scholarship.

“I definitely would do it again,” Weber said. “It was a really good experience and you do get closer to people and it looks good on college applications.”
