Knightline tryouts to begin with new coach

On April 6, the Knightline dance team will begin tryouts. This year there’s a little twist in the team, a new coach.

“I think Coach [Kelly] Pierce will make us practice harder and be more serious,” freshman Sarah Cole said.

Pierce wants the girls to relax, have fun and enjoy dancing at tryouts. She is ready for tryouts and some of former coach Heather Box’s skills have really helped her become ready.

“Coach Box was good at keeping everything organized and taking care of everything that happens backstage, like the things no one sees when the girls are performing and I took that from her,” Pierce said.

Pierce is very excited for the opportunities this year as head coach of the varsity team. But tryouts are just the beginning of her opportunities.

“[During tryouts I want to] be the best I can, and not just assume I’ll be on varsity again this year,” freshman Katie Stepanek said.

Pierce has no idea how many girls she will take for the team yet, but to impress the judges they should learn their turns, seconds, triples, heal and toe touches, and leaps. The judges are brought in from different places and have
years of experience. They will be scored on technique and their routine. Making the team is one thing but it takes more than good dancing to make varsity.

“I expect them to be respectful, on time to classes and practice, keep good grades, and cooperative,” Pierce said.

Pierce thinks the previous Knightline members need to step up and help out with the newer teammates and help with the routines.

“I feel I have to do better this year so the incoming freshmen will respect and look up to me,” Stepanek said.

The 2009-10 Knightline squad has a lot to live up to, such as the nationals trip the team took this past year. Most of them think they will work harder because they know what they have to look like to win nationals.
