Club plans annual Spanish festival for students

Cinco de Mayo: an independent holiday, a Spanish celebration around the world, a traditional day of joy and partying equivalent to the United State’s Fourth of July.

For the next three weeks, Spanish Club members and officers will be planning and organizing for North’s annual Cinco de Mayo party held in the commons around 6 p.m.

“We have lots of big things planned in store for us,” junior club officer Jacy Waldrop said. “Even though we have other events planned in the next month for the [Spanish Club], all everyone is talking about is our party.”

The annual celebration is traditionally held in the commons with fun and games such as musical chairs and limbo. The club members each put in money for pizza, and any non-member attending the party must pay before hand for pizza that will be delivered the night of the celebration.

“This is our biggest time of the year,” club sponsor Stacey Berberich said. “This is our biggest event of the year as well.”

Even with planning Cinco de Mayo, the Spanish Club is also organizing many various other activities within the foreign language clubs. Few include cooking Spanish food at a club member’s house in order to learn about ethnicities. Also, members will join together at Swing Around Fun Town for some mini-golf. A movie night will be hosted at Waldrop’s house as well.

“We have various movie nights throughout the year,” junior Matt Lindsay said. “This is why Cinco de Mayo is a much bigger deal to us than movie night.”

While North’s Cinco de Mayo celebration is mainly a traditional holiday and party hosted by the Spanish Club for its ethnic background being Spanish, both the German Club and French Club are helping with the many needs to get done before the actual date of the party.

“I will probably help with decorations and cleaning up the commons afterwards,” junior Randi Yousey said. “That’s what I did last year and it helped a lot.”

Though club members are the majority of students that attend, anyone at North is welcome to join the foreign language festivities. Whether club member or not, North’s annual Cinco de Mayo celebration will be an unforgettable tradition, bringing all foreign languages together, and teaching students the cultures of others.
