On Friday, May 1, the annual Secret Scholar luncheon was held after school in the library, where NHS members and teachers came together to learn who each student’s “secret scholar” was and who they had been sending gifts to throughout the year.
In the library, a pot luck-style luncheon was held, in which everyone brought a varying entrée or main dish.
NHS President Sarah Semmel, whose secret scholar was journalism teacher and publication adviser Aaron Manfull, was excited for her secret scholar to “find out who she really is.”
“We never got to share ‘thank yous’ and laughter in person,” Semmel said, “but now we can.”
Most senior NHS members bought one last gift for their teacher for the luncheon, intended as their final gift of the year.
Not only were students “excited” to surprise their scholars, but the teachers were also awaiting the true identity of who has secretly been sending them gifts for most of the year.
“I think it’s kind of cool to learn more about the students,” Steve Willott, whose gift-giver is Sara Stubbert, said. “A lot of the time it’s a student you have in class, and it’s kind of cool to live vicariously through your students and remember what it’s like to go to college.”
