Cadet teachers prepare for evaluations

As the 2008-2009 school year comes to an end, so does the Cadet Teaching program. To end the year, sponsor William Crow will be evaluating all cadet teachers

on their performance. He will be dropping by the classes throughout the month of May and grading them based on their teaching skills such as clarity of speaking, interaction with the kids, and the dress of the cadet teacher. Crow’s teacher’s assistant, senior Katie Coffey, believes that the cadets will do well in their evaluations
“I think they will do really good,” Coffey said. “They’re very comfortable with their classes.”
Each of the cadets must turn in a lesson plan before the evaluation is to take place. The students will teach their class just like they would during their seventh hour everyday. Most cadets teach at Becky-David,Henderson, Harvest Ridge, Barnwell,
Hollenbeck or Francis Howell Middle. They were able to choose a specific age group and then they were matched with a teacher. Many cadets are prepared and calm, anticipating their evaluation.
“It will be pretty good,” senior Megan Moore said. “Mr. Crow will come watch me teach and I hope I will do well.”
Next year, Cadet Teaching may not come back. It may become an after school program, but nothing is certain yet. Crow believes that the Cadet Teaching program is more successful in preparing kids for teaching careers than some college classes.
“The purpose is to show the students if they really want to be teachers, “Crow said. “As a student, you see it from only one point of view, but it is so much more than it seems.”
