Spanish club students receive scholarships

After four years of time, four years of learning, and four years of working, seniors are now leaving. It is time for the class of 2009 to move on to the next stage in their lives. Colleges have been chosen and scholarships are being given out.

Through a quite lengthy application process, two senior members of North’s Spanish club are being given a $100 scholarship each. Selected by the Spanish club sponsor, Spanish teacher Stacey Berberich, seniors Jacob Wilson and GiGi Waldrop will receive their award from North through the club scholarship.

“[Senior scholarships] have always been a tradition for the club,” Berberich said. “We’ve always worked out something to give out to the seniors.”

As the club members have an opinion in the dollar amount of each scholarship, Berberich still has the final judgement call on who is chosen to receive them.

“[The members] like to participate and give input into this,” Berberich said. “It is, after all, a club scholarship. This money actually came from the club members.”

The money was all raised throughout the year from various fundraisers such as its Cinco de Mayo party, a movie night, and other gatherings. Each fundraiser had a small charge to get into the gathering.

“[GiGi] worked really hard for this,” sister Jacy Waldrop said. “She’s always been involved with Spanish club and definitely deserves this. I know she appreciates this.”

Though Wilson and Waldrop are not planning on majoring in Spanish, both are significant participants with Spanish club. After the application deadline of May 11 past by with only two applicants, Berberich decided that both seniors would receive some form of money.

“Even though there wasn’t big turnout for the scholarship this year, it still means a lot to me being chosen,” GiGi said. “Every little bit counts.”
