Yesterday President Barack Obama gave a back to school speech from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia to all students from kindergarten to 12th-grade. Prior to the speech being given there was some controversy over what the presidential address would be about and whether or not students should be allowed to view the speech.
Some districts in the area were receiving calls and e-mails about the speech before it was given. Here at North, if teachers wanted to show the speech in their classroom yesterday, they were required to have students bring in a consent form signed by a parent or guardian. A transcript of the speech was released the day before President Obama’s address was given. Even with the opportunity to view the speech before it was given and after the speech was delivered there were parents who still refused to allow their children view the speech, however most who were doubtful about the speech’s intentions before seemed to find little wrong with it now.
