Students brave the cold for Winter Warm-up

winterwarmup_1People make the time to collect donations for people in need around the community, but most don’t stand out in the cold to accomplish this. On Friday Jan. 29, for the second year, StuCo held an event called Winter Warm-up. Around 20 members of StuCo stood in FHN’s front parking lot for three hours and endured the cold weather with the temperature getting as low as 15 degrees.

Not only were they standing out in the cold, they were also wearing their summer clothing in order to reflect the harshness that people without clothes endure. People drove up to the school and brought clothes to donate. As the StuCo members received bags full of clothes, they would rummage through them and pick out something to put on that would hopefully keep them warm.

“I found the most crazy things in the bag and put them on,” junior chief of staff Alyssa Bocci said.

Along with putting on the clothes the StuCo members started a fire, had blankets, made s’mores, and even danced to help keep them warm. One of the members thought the Winter Warm-up was a great bonding experience for the group.

“[My favorite part of the night was] Everybody getting up and dancing, sitting around the fire and talking,” Bocci said. “It was a great bonding experience.”

Though trying to stay warm in the cold was enjoyable for the members, the main goal of the night was to collect clothes and to make a difference. People brought up clothes in black trash bags and by the end of the night StuCo had around 20 bags full of clothes to donate to a group called FISH. FISH donates clothing and food for the community. In general, Winter Warm-up was a huge success this year.

They had a better turnout of donations and more people took a part in helping. Members think that this success was due to the event being better advertised than last year.

“It really amazes me,” junior secretary Laurel Reese said. “It makes you warm inside that people are that generous. Some people had brand new clothes.”
