Special Needs Prom held at SCHS

specialneedspromschs41110Friday April 9, St. Charles High School hosted their Special Needs Prom. Renaissance members from the school planned and executed the evening with the help from Parkview Gardens and Roses who donated flowers to decorate the portrait area.

Students danced along with the special needs students and got them pumped for their very own prom. Even KSDK anchor Mike Bush was there with a camera-man to shed a little light on the event. But that didn’t even phase the students, they were too busy enjoying themselves.

“What do you like about the prom, Miranda?” father of Miranda Kaesner asked. “What do you like best, dancing?”

“Yes,” FHN sophomore Miranda Kaesner said.

“Music?”

Nod.

“Being with your friends?”

“Yes.”

At first, about twenty students were just enjoying the refreshments and occasionally popping a balloon scattered on the floor. However, when the DJ turned on the “Cha Cha Slide,” things really livened up.

Students crowded onto the dance floor made from the SCHS commons and let loose to songs like “Barbie Girl,” “I Gotta Feeling,” and even the “Locomotion” which started into a conga line.

The room was lit of flashes, and only half of them were from the DJ’s light show. The rest were from the flashing of the parent’s cameras.

“They feel so special tonight,” mother Jean Hodges said. “They have their own dance like everybody else. These teenagers take the time out and do this for them. It’s awesome.”
