9-1-1. The number called when there is an emergency.

The same call that senior Ryan Block will be responding to as a firefighter in a couple of short years. Volunteering this summer with intentions of attending Saint Charles Community College next year and eventually moving on to Lindenwood to complete their fire program, Block has his future planned out: he wants to be a firefighter.

“I’m really excited about it,” Ryan said. “I can’t wait to help people.”
Though his college choice is often questioned by his friends, Ryan stands behind his decision to go somewhere that is less expensive, that is close to home, and one that receives the same benefits as a school far away. As for his career path itself, his father is nothing less than approving.

“It’s Ryan’s decision,” father Steve Block said. “I think it’s a noble profession. I am worried like I think all parents are about their kids. I do understand the dangers involved with it but there are dangers in all professions just having to commute to work everyday.”

Ryan’s inspiration to become a firefighter started a few years back when his Grandma experienced her house catching on fire and Ryan had to watch the diminishing effects that it had on his family.

“I just wanted to help out after seeing how much people lose,” Ryan said. “It’s more than just losing a house and garage. It’s the memories and pictures that are the things that really matter.”
