Imagine being 2,000 feet above the earth’s surface, manning the controls of a single-engine, four seat airplane. This what Nick Smith, a senior at North, has been doing in his spare time since mid-March of 2010. Smith is learning to fly.
“I think it’s the best thing ever,” Smith said. “I like the freedom and sense of accomplishment when you land.”
Smith has been taking flying lessons three days a week at St. Charles Flying Service. He has learned how to plan a trip, stall recovery, sharp and steep turns, among other things. Smith has already even flown by himself several times.
Smith is currently planning on attending Missouri Institute of Science and Technology at Rolla to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering, but plans to continue flying as well.
“Flying will always be a hobby for me,” Smith said. “But hopefully I can turn it into a career someday.”
