Changes discussed at StuCo meeting

StuCo representative hands out fliers to students at meeting. The first Student Council (StuCo) meeting of the year took place on Sept. 7 during homeroom. At this meeting, StuCo officers discussed upcoming events, updates in social media use and the new policy regarding club voting procedures.

“We are super excited this year,” sponsor Jani Wilkens said at the meeting. “We have super great people leading the charge.”

This year, StuCo officers and sponsors decided to allow only the homeroom representatives to vote at meetings while all StuCo members were allowed to vote last year.

“I think it’s unfortunate for people like me who want to vote but didn’t get elected, but overall I think it’s a good thing because not everyone deserves to vote,” regular member Cassie Witte said. “It will give StuCo more solid votes and more serious opinions.”

Another change this year is StuCo’s use of social media. StuCo became involved in social media last school year, but the effort was unsuccessful. This year, StuCo plans on improving the use of social media by using Facebook, Twitter and text messaging to get information out to members.

“Last year it fell through,” Chief of Staff Ashley Butterfield said. “This year we are actually going to keep up with it.”

Another topic discussed at the meeting were upcoming events which included the fall pep assembly and the Homecoming dance. StuCo is working to make this years’ events unique from past years’.

“We are working on quality instead of quantity,” Vice President Nicole Yuede said. “We are going to have the same events but not do as many fundraisers.”
