‘Facebook law’ causes uproar

The Amy Hestir Student Protection Act is a law prohibiting student/teacher communication via social media. It was to come into effect Aug. 28 but was blocked by a judge on Aug. 26 and is currently being addressed at the Missouri special legislative session.

“It limited what I could say to my students in every facet,” Government teacher William Crow said. “It tied my hands.”

The major issue with the law was that it was unspecific and forbade teachers to be Facebook friends even with their own children. However, some justified the law with stories such as Amy Hestir’s, the laws namesake. Hestir spoke of her mistreatment by a teacher when she was 14.

“I don’t think people should complain about it,” junior Sidney Reynold said. “It keeps kids out of trouble.”
